Avro 626
Singel engine two/three-seat advanced trainer
In the early thirties the Belgian Government decided to acquire 12 Avro 626 Prefect (Tutor) aircraft for advanced pilot training at the Pilot School based at Wevelgem. In Belgian service the Avro 626, which was powered by a 240 hp Armstrong Siddeley Lynx IVC engine, had an additional cockpit behind the rear seat. This additional cockpit could be equipped with a Scarff ring and machine gun for gunnery training and the aircraft also carried equipment for air navigation and wireless training.
All aircraft entered service by 1935 and the survivors soldiered on up to the outbreak of the Second World War. Some aircraft were transferred to the French authorities. (D. Brackx)
