Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutter
Single engine two-seat reconnaissance aircraft
In March 1917 eight Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutters were delivered from the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) to the Belgian Aviation Militaire: British serials were N5235 to N5242 and in Belgian service the Strutters were renumbered S1 to S8. In July/August 1917 at least thirty more Royal Flying Corps (RFC) Strutters were transferred to the Belgian Air Service (unfortunately only a few tie-ups withe the Belgian registrations are known). Initially those reconnaissance aircraft were used by the 6eme Escadrille which was an observation/reconnaissance unit based at Houtem. A few weeks later another thirty Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutters (built under license in France) were acquired and delivered to N°s 2 and 3 Squadrons based at De Moeren airfield and N° 4 squadron based at Hondschoote (F.), while a small number of Strutters was used by the flying school at Juvisy-sur-Orge. More powerful Spad XIs replaced most of the operational Sopwiths before the end of the war and only a handful remained in service for non-operational duties after the war. One original Begian Air Service Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutter (S-85) is preserved for posterity at the Brussels Air Museum. (Daniel Brackx)
