Belgian student pilots perform first F-35 Lightning II flights without prior F-16 experience
A historic moment at Luke Air Force Base in the United States: the first group of Belgian pilots within the Euro NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training (ENJJPT) program has completed their first flights in the F-35. This is the first generation of Belgian pilots to transition directly to a fifth-generation fighter aircraft without first flying the F-16.
Key points of this transformation:
A fundamentally new approach: This milestone marks the beginning of a completely new training system. While the F-16 was previously a necessary stepping stone, the current program is now specifically tailored for direct entry into the F-35.
Result of years of preparation: This success is due to a carefully developed system. Belgian instructors have been specifically trained to mentor these less experienced pilots in the advanced training environment of Luke AFB.
Cognitive and tactical demands: Moving to the F-35 shifts the focus toward complex information processing. Pilots must rapidly translate vast amounts of sensor data into well-considered tactical decisions.
From procedures to missions: Following these successful first flights, the focus shifts toward threat analysis, tactics, and ultimately the full execution of combat missions.
