NATO Air Surveillance: Strategic Shift to the GlobalEye Platform (Subject to confirmation)
NATO is facing a major overhaul of its Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) capabilities. Although a final decision is not expected until the NATO Summit in Ankara in July 2026, strong signals indicate a shift in course. According to diplomatic sources, statements, and reports from the German news agency DPA and the French publication La Lettre, the Alliance appears to be opting for the GlobalEye, produced by Sweden's Saab and Canada's Bombardier.
Important Nuance: Industrial Self-Interest. These reports are also filtering through from French circles. France has already decided to replace its own AWACS fleet with GlobalEye aircraft. By allocating modernization and maintenance to Sabena Technics in Bordeaux-Mérignac, Saab secures local employment and industrial participation for the French government. It is therefore conceivable that the French promotion of the GlobalEye as the NATO standard is partly driven by national economic interests. Consequently, we are careful about drawing direct parallels for the entire Alliance before an official agreement is in place. However, there is currently very little alternative choice on the market.
The Need for Replacement: An Aging Fleet
For decades, the current fleet of E-3A AWACS aircraft has formed the indispensable backbone of NATO air defense, but the sustainability of these planes is now under severe pressure. Since the aircraft are based on the outdated Boeing 707 design, they face fundamental challenges: original systems are reaching their technological limits in today’s digital battlefield, while operational availability is declining due to intensive maintenance cycles. This makes the transition to a modern successor not just desirable, but urgently necessary for the security of NATO Europe.
An Unexpected Turn: The Status of the Boeing E-7
For a long time, the American Boeing E-7 Wedgetail was considered the undisputed favorite. The recent shift in preference toward the GlobalEye is seen in defense circles as a combination of budgetary and industrial factors. The U.S. Air Force (USAF) recently adjusted its budgetary priorities for the E-7, leading to uncertainty regarding timelines and costs for international partners. Simultaneously, the GlobalEye offers a more modern and flexible platform that appears to be available sooner and aligns more closely with European member states' desire for technological diversification.
Saab and Bombardier Enter the Fray
The technical superiority of the GlobalEye system lies in the seamless integration of the Bombardier Global 6500 business jet with Saab’s Erieye ER radar. As a true multi-domain platform, the system can simultaneously detect and track objects in the air, at sea, and on land, with a known detection range exceeding 550 kilometers. Its advanced Gallium Nitride (GaN) S-band radar provides extreme energy efficiency and increased sensitivity for early detection of small targets like drones and cruise missiles. With an 11-hour endurance and the ability to operate from shorter runways, it serves as an advanced flying nerve center for modern network-centric warfare.
The Belgian Role: Expertise and Continuity
Belgium has traditionally been an active and valued partner within the multinational AWACS program, a role that remains crucial for collective defense. The Belgian Air Force already deploys highly qualified personnel within the current fleet on a structural basis, with Belgian pilots and mission operators serving as integral members of international crews.
