Belgium reinvests in ground anti-air defenses.

Belgium and the Netherlands have finalized a multi-billion dollar government-to-government agreement to jointly overhaul their ground-based air defenses.
The deal, signed on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Ankara, centers on the procurement of the NASAMS medium-range air defense system, manufactured by Norway's Kongsberg and U.S.-based Raytheon.
Belgium is committing an estimated $2.5 billion to $3.1 billion to reconstruct its defensive envelope. The procurement encompasses 10 NASAMS medium-range batteries—allocating nine to Belgium and one to Luxembourg—alongside 20 Skyranger short-range systems.
The incoming network is designed to safeguard civilian populations and vital national infrastructure, including nuclear facilities and the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, against missile, helicopter, and drone threats.
By integrating into an existing procurement framework previously established by the Netherlands, Belgium bypasses standard acquisition delays to accelerate hardware delivery.
With this procurement, Belgium will have again, after several years, a dedicated anti-air defense units. We might even see some old squadrons resurface.
