The Future of Belgian Helicopter Capacity: The H145M

The modernization of the Belgian helicopter fleet reaches a new milestone as production of the Airbus H145M is in full swing in Donauwörth, Germany. The introduction of this new Light Utility Helicopter (LUH) is part of the Strategic Vision 2025 and is set to fully replace the aging Agusta A109 fleet by the end of 2027. Belgium has purchased a total of twenty aircraft, fifteen for Defense and five for the Federal Police. The latter can bolster military capacity during crisis situations.
The H145M platform is characterized by its broad operational versatility. The aircraft will be deployed for Special Operations Forces (SOF) missions, medical evacuations (MEDEVAC), transport, and observation. Additionally, it provides support for civil missions, such as firefighting and hoisting operations. For specialized military operations, the helicopter is equipped with advanced communication systems and the capability to be fitted with mission-specific weaponry.
From an industrial perspective, the project is regarded as a prime example of European technological cooperation, contributing to the continent's strategic autonomy. Progress on the production line is currently substantial. On the flightline, the first delivery aircraft, RL-04, is already fitted with five rotor blades and ready for the final stage. Furthermore, six aircraft are in the finishing phase on the Final Assembly Line, and two other units are currently undergoing Major Component Assembly.
An intensive testing phase will commence in early June, with the Belgian state remaining in control of the process. Prior to the official handover, each aircraft will be flown by a test pilot from the Directorate General Material Resources (DGMR) to confirm compliance with contractual requirements. Simultaneously, the Quality Assurance (QAR) department will conduct technical inspections as part of the acceptance procedure.
Parallel to production, the conversion training for flight personnel is taking place at Airbus training facilities in Augsburg. Although pilots of the current A109 and ex NH90 helicopters possess extensive experience, specific type-rating training is necessary due to the differing systems and flight characteristics. For this training, aircraft RL-01 and RL-02 are already being used operationally. Pilots note a shift in workload; whereas older aircraft require intensive manual handling, the H145M offers a high degree of automation. This allows the crew to shift their focus from basic flying to the tactical execution of the mission.
With this investment, Belgium aims for a modern and versatile helicopter capacity that meets the current needs of Defense and international obligations within the framework of NATO and Europe.
