In late 1929 the Avia BH33, powered by a Jupiter VII engine, was one of the contenders for the Aéronautique Militaire fleet-standardisation competition which ultimately was won by the Fairey Firefly. Three aircraft were bought for evaluation purposes by 7/II/2 squadron.
