On 15 March 1945, North American P-51D-20-NA Mustang 44-72213 of 402 Sq. - 370FG - 71FW of the 9th AF piloted by 1stLt. James Ward, had a spectacular crash on take-off or landing at Ophoven (Y32) when hitting the wooden control-tower. The Mustang had only clocked 18.10 flying hours. The pilot was not injured but unfortunately the truck-driver got killed in the accident.
