Koksijde International Airshow 1968

Hawker Hunter F.4 ID-123

The “Koksijde International Airshow 1968” which took place on the weekend of the August 10th and 11th 1968 was officially named "Meeting en Festival van Stuntvliegen" or "Airshow and Festival of Aerobatic flying", accentuating the fact that the whole event was set up around no less than 5 world famous aerobatic teams and a large number of aerobatic solo displays. In 1968 the Belgian Air Force was celebrating its 50th Anniversary 1918-1968 (?) so that a large number of vintage Belgian Air Force aircraft was taken from the Royal Army Museum reserves (the Aeronautical department/Brussels Air Museum was not yet created) to be put on display on the Belgian airshows at Brustem (June 68) and Koksijde.

Aerobatic Teams

Belgium was present with its famous "Rode Duivels" or Red Devils team which in 1968 was commanded by   Cdt. Paul Van Essche. Another diminutive Belgian team "Les Manchots", composed of two specially decorated Stampe Vertongen SV-4B elementary trainers stunned the public with some very close formation "mirror" flying.  Traditionally the RAF had delegated its superb "Red Arrows" team flying the nimble Folland Gnat, while France had sent its famous "Patrouille de France" also flying the Fouga Magister. Italy was represented by the "Frecchi Tricolore" flying the specially prepared Fiat G91 PAN while Denmark had delegated an impressive team flying 5 North American F-100D Super Sabre's.

Solo demonstrations

The Belgian Army's Light Aviation surprised many spectators with an original display of their hardware composing of 6 Alouette II helicopters, three Piper L-18C Super Cub observation aircraft and three Dornier Do27J light transports. Solo displays were given by the Fairchild C-119G Flying Boxcar (pilot Charly Van Straelen) and of course the incredible and unique "touch and go - roll, touch and go - roll performed by Starfighter pilot "Sus" Jacobs. A very much appreciated solo display was given by the leader of the Dutch "Whiskey Four" team on Lockheed T-33A. Solo demonstrations were also given by a French Armée de l'Air Dassault Mirage IIIE as well as an early-production Transall C.160 transport aircraft (in view of a potential Belgian acquisition?). The Italian Air Force demonstrated its new Macchi MB326 and Piaggio P166 aircraft while a USAF Kaman HH-43 Husky demonstrated its Search and Rescue capabilities
