The US city of Mesa is holding a public meeting concerning safety and noise issues at Falcon Field airport. Homeowners want training (and other) aircraft operations curtailed citing noise and safety issues, while business operators who garner millions in related revenue, argue they and the airport have been around much longer than the homeowners. 18/09 - Sabca to extend co-operation with USAF for another five years.

As a conclusion of a full competitive Request For Proposal, the US Government, Ogden Air Logistics Center (OO-ALC, 538 ACSG), has awarded S.A.B.C.A (Société Anonyme Belge de Constructions Aéronautiques) a new five-years Requirement-type contract for In-Theater Depot Support of the USAFE A-10 fleet, covering Fiscal Years 2010 to 2014. A long-time partner of the USAF, S.A.B.C.A. started its common history with the A-10 almost ten years ago, as a sub-contractor of Lockheed Martin Integration Systems (LMSI, Owego USA), with the Embedded GPS Integration (EGI) that S.A.B.C.A. performed on the European-based A-10 fleet. In 2001, as a conclusion of another competitive Request For Proposals, the US Government awarded S.A.B.C.A a first five-years ID-IQ contract for depot support of the USAFE A-10 fleet. In April 2007 a new ID-IQ contract extended this favourable co-operation with the USAF for another three years. The new contract awarded last week in conclusion of a one-year long re-competition procedure will allow S.A.B.C.A. to go one step further into its involvement and commitment to the A-10. This workload will come in addition to the other programs currently performed by S.A.B.C.A. for Belgian Defence, USAF and several other foreign customers. Since Feb 2000, under the first two contracts, a large number of A-10 have already rolled out of the Charleroi flightline after having been inspected, repaired, re-painted or upgraded. S.A.B.C.A. 14/09 - Brussels Airlines & Lufthansa expand their codesharing services to Africa.

As from September 14th, 2006 Brussels Airlines offers a perfect flight schedule to South Africa, Ghana and Sudan thanks to an extended partnership with Lufthansa. All flights are operated by Lufthansa and commercialized by Brussels Airlines through a codeshare agreement. Alternatively, Lufthansa sells seats on the Brussels Airlines flights to Banjul, Nairobi, Douala, Yaounde, Bujumbura, Abidjan and Monrovia. Brussels Airlines and Lufthansa substantially expand their cooperation on the African market. This agreement allows Brussels Airlines to offer its customers an excellent flight schedule to South Africa, Ghana and Sudan, countries that up until now were not part of the vast African network offered by Brussels Airlines. Thanks to a codeshare agreement with Lufthansa these destinations are included in the Brussels Airlines network portfolio. Brussels Airlines passengers travel from Brussels Airport to Frankfurt, from where they connect on partner Lufthansa to Johannesburg, Cape Town, Accra or Khartoum. Since the beginning of July a similar solution is in place for the Brussels Airlines customers who travel between Brussels and Libreville (Gabon). Flight schedules have been adjusted to allow for smooth connections in Frankfurt. Passengers can choose between First, Business and Economy Class on their intercontinental flight. All flights are eligible for earning and redeeming Miles & More miles. Apart from being a major commercial and cultural partner of Belgium, South Africa is also a popular holiday destination. Up until now Brussels Airlines did not offer a travel solution for customers wanting to travel to Johannesburg or Cape Town. Thanks to the convenient daily evening/night flight Brussels-Frankfurt-Johannesburg and the seasonal flight Brussels-Frankfurt-Cape Town, this is now possible. Also for those who want to travel to Ghana in East-Africa, there is good news from Brussels Airlines. The prominent Ghanaian community in Belgium and the many businessmen interested in this economically attractive country can from now on travel five times a week to the capital Accra thanks to Brussels Airlines and Lufthansa. Accra enhances the strong presence of Brussels Airlines on the African West Coast. The codeshare agreement between Brussels Airlines and Lufthansa allows for four weekly connections between Brussels and the Sudanese capital Khartoum. Source: Brussels Airlines

Since the beginning of their second deployment to Afghanistan on September 1st 2008, Belgian Air Component F-16AM fighters have flown over 780 missions clocking up some 2,500 flight hours from Kandahar airbase. In addition, every day 2 aircraft are placed under alert, ready to take off within 30 minutes to intervene on behalf of allied ground forces. During the flights, ground troops were supported by observation, escort and protection in case they took enemy fire. These missions were always flown by two aircraft and during 116 of these patrols an intervention was requested by ground forces under fire. Most of these interventions could avert the threat without the use of force, but in about 30 cases the use of weapons was necessary to stop the life threatening situation for the allied soldiers. Until now, all these interventions are performed without collateral damage, which demonstrates the extraordinary professionalism and skill of the pilots. The Airbus A330 must be ready for Belgian official flights in two months. This will give the Belgian crew time to prepare themselves for flights with the new company and aircraft type.  Source: BAHA forum.

A diver suffering from the bends after an incident off the coast of Dover was flown to a London hospital's decompression unit for treatment. The woman was brought ashore by boat to Dover harbour and a Belgian air force helicopter was summoned because local coastguard and RAF machines were busy. It arrived in just over 20 minutes, a Dover coastguard spokesman said. Police closed London's Regents Park on Sunday to allow it to land and the woman was taken to St John hospital. The Dover coastguard spokesman said helicopter movements were co-ordinated from RAF Kinloss in Scotland and the Belgian Sea King was the nearest to the scene of the incident. 28/07 - Six teens rescued from Dover cliffs by Belgian Sea King helicopter.

Six young people were rescued by the crew of a Belgian helicopter after becoming trapped near Dover Harbour. The alarm was raised at 3.45pm yesterday when the five boys and one girl discovered they had been cut off by the rising tide. The youngsters, aged 15 to 19 from Dover and Elvington, had parked at Langdon Cliffs and walked down Langdon Steps to the foreshore. They decided to walk along to look at some caves, but when they wanted to return, the path was covered by water. They climbed up onto rocks to keep clear of the water and used a mobile phone to call the Coastguard for help. Dover lifeboat was launched and the Deal, Langdon and Folkestone Coastguard teams were sent to the scene. Plans to rescue them by boat had to be abandoned because the land they needed to cross was unstable, and the boat was moving around. The lifeboat Coxswain and Coastguards decided a helicopter was needed, and the only one available was from Belgium. It flew across and winched the youngsters to safety, landing them at the Coastguard station. They were given safety advice and they were all sorry for the trouble they had caused,” said a Coastguard spokesman.  Source: Kent Online

03/07 - Cargo B becomes latest victim of recession

Cargo B Airlines has gone out of business. The Belgian air cargo company, based at Brussels airport, announced on Wednesday (2/7/2009) that it would cease to trade immediately. The company, started in 2007, operated two Boeing 747-400 freighters and served routes into Africa and South America. The management is reported as stating that although volumes of freight were sufficient to sustain reasonable load factors, the present prices for freight were not enough to cover the company's costs. Niek van der Weide, the company's commercial vice-president is quoted as saying very low rates, strong competition with no improvement in economic climate "means we cannot expect major improvements in the short term." The company would appear not to have entered bankruptcy, rather it seems it has voluntarily ended operations. As far as is known all creditors have been paid. Cargo B Airlines had been attempting to re-capitalise by negotiating with its shareholders, however these came to nothing. A local Belgian newspaper, De Tijd, stated that the company's bank also declined to further extend credit facilities beyond the €5m already leant. The company was re-capitalised last year, with two European private equity companies and NYK investing a sum believed to be around €20m. The relationship with NYK was more than just financial. Cargo B leased one of its two aircraft from the NYK airfreight subsidiary Nippon Cargo Airlines, and it carried Nippon Cargo Airlines freight on routes between Japan and South America. The closing of Cargo B illustrates the present state of the air cargo market, with IATA describing yields down 17% over the quarter. Rather than just a lack of cargo it is the surplus of capacity driving down prices that is making life difficult for those holding air freight assets. Source: Ti Consulting

01/07 - N° 40 Squadron Seaking flies 2.500th rescue scramble from Koksijde airbase.

On Sunday June 28th 2009 at 16h00 local time Koksijde based N° 40 Squadron was contacted by the UK Aeronautical Rescue Coordination Centre at Kinloss (U.K.) with the request to participate in a Search and Rescue mission for a crashed private aircraft off the English coast. 01/07 - Cargo B Airlines is making an investment mayday call

Belgian airfreight company Cargo B Airlines is waiting on tenterhooks for a last-minute investor to rescue the business. A board meeting was scheduled for 13:00 today to look at any last-ditch avenues to source rescue capital. This meeting was scheduled originally for yesterday morning, but was postponed at the last minute. Personnel in Africa and South America are being recalled in apparent anticipation of the imminent dissolution of the company. When asked if the company would fold if it failed to attract new investors, chairman and company founder Rob Kuijpers, who was visibly affected, replied simply: “I don’t know.” Cargo B Airlines recently acquired two new Boeing B747-400. It employs about 50 people in total, including pilots. The new aircraft are currently in Amsterdam for maintenance, according to operations director Dirk Vrebos. Today’s scheduled flights have been cancelled, but the planes would be in the sky again over the weekend, according to Vrebos. In terms of outstanding debts, the company has paid the invoices of Aviapartner up to and including Monday. However, the latest fuel invoice had been settled by major Japanese shareholder the NYK Group. Cargo B Airlines was established in 2007 on the back of a viable business plan. However, the natural growth of the company was impeded by such factors as late acquisition of aircraft, delay in obtaining an air cargo licence, and the subsequent collapse of the global air-cargo sector due to the economic downturn.
